Do You have Good Home Security Habits?

More than   anything else, home security is all about smart habits.   Have you ever forgotten to lock your windows and doors ? How about forgetting to secure your tool shed, garage and other outbuildings ? Check around your property , does it have a lot of hiding spots – like trees that are convenientlyclose to  doorways and back windows?

Here’s  another question –   When you’re out of town does your house look empty or does it appear that someone is around ? Do trusted neighbors know how to reach you ?  It’s not hard to learn some good home security habits.  To get you started , this is a few ideas:

Basic Home Security Tips

    * If you see something suspicious in your neighborhood – don’t ignore it.

    * Just use your surname and your initials on a mailbox , in the phone book and on your building directory .  Especially if you’re a woman. And don’t draw attention to the fact, if you live alone .

    * Always keep your doors and windows locked .

    * Use a heavy duty safety chain, a one inch deadbolt and a wide angle door peephole

    * Remember not to unlock the safety chain when someone comes to your door until you decide to let them in.

    * When you move into a new home , replace all the locks .

    * If you lose your key or your purse is stolen, change the locks.

    * Always check the identification of anyone you don’t know who is looking to get you to open your door and do it BEFORE you release the security chain

    * Keep interior and exterior lights on.

    * Install security lighting and cameras in your driveway, backyard and also covering t your front, back and side doors . Illuminate dark corners.

    * If you’re home shows signs of being broken into , stay outside .  Get to a phone and alert the police.

    * On the telephone , never admit that you’re alone.

    * Don’t get on an elevator with someone even remotely suspicious .

    * Avoid the stairs in your apartment if you’re alone .

    * If you’re travelling , arrange for your home to look like someone is at home . Either stop your mail/newspapers or have a reliable neighbor pick them up .

    * Ask your friends and neighbors to keep an eye on your house.

    * On a different note, if you have kids and a pool, get a swimming pool alarm.
